In the beginning...
The Bury - Manchester portion of Metrolink has its origins on the former 750v DC third rail line, on which British Rail operated passenger services using Class 504 Electrical Multiple Units. This photograph, taken during the East Lancashire Railway's "Mega-Mix" event in July 2000 shows an early preservation attempt on one of the two surviving cars of the sole surviving set. Note how the full yellow ends completely envelope the driver's doors and the orange warning light mounted on the roof!
